Matthew 25:6
“At midnight they were roused by the shout, ‘Look, the bridegroom is coming! Come out and meet him!’
My house has an engine. It’s true. For the last two years I have lived in an RV, traveling the country. I have a checklist of things I have to do before each trip: I check the tire pressures, I make sure the awning is in (I didn’t do that once, and it was a disaster!), and I check the oil.
The engine in my RV is a big V10 Triton gas engine. If I want the engine to keep running, I have to make sure I have enough oil in it. I don’t know how mechanical you are, but here’s a tip from your Uncle Jer: engines don’t run without oil. They start to make weird clanking sounds, then they die.
The ten virgins in today’s story had to check their oil, too. They didn’t know for sure when the bridegroom was coming, so it was up to them to be prepared. As they waited, they had to make sure they had enough oil for their lamps. Five of them did, five of them didn’t. As a result, the five who didn’t check their oil didn’t have any when the bridegroom came. They had to make a quick trip down to the Galilee Walmart to get more oil. While they were gone, the bridegroom showed up, and the unprepared ladies were locked out. They missed everything because they hadn’t checked their oil.
It is vital for us to keep our oil topped off. We do that by maintaining a constant vigilance in our lives, making sure we are spiritually prepared for when Christ returns. Once Christ splits the sky, you won’t have to make sure your life is right. By then, it will be too late. Keep your eyes on Christ, living for him, and staying prepared for his return. That will ensure your spiritual oil is topped off and ready!
